Book Club Friday: Sisterhood Everlasting

2 Sep

You  know what today is?  Book Club Friday!

Today I’m covering Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares.

From Amazon:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ann Brashares comes the welcome return of the characters whose friendship became a touchstone for a generation. Now Tibby, Lena, Carmen, and Bridget have grown up, starting their lives on their own. And though the jeans they shared are long gone, the sisterhood is everlasting.

Despite having jobs and men that they love, each knows that something is missing: the closeness that once sustained them. Carmen is a successful actress in New York, engaged to be married, but misses her friends. Lena finds solace in her art, teaching in Rhode Island, but still thinks of Kostos and the road she didn’t take. Bridget lives with her longtime boyfriend, Eric, in San Francisco, and though a part of her wants to settle down, a bigger part can’t seem to shed her old restlessness.

Then Tibby reaches out to bridge the distance, sending the others plane tickets for a reunion that they all breathlessly await. And indeed, it will change their lives forever—but in ways that none of them could ever have expected.

As moving and life-changing as an encounter with long-lost best friends, Sisterhood Everlasting is a powerful story about growing up, losing your way, and finding the courage to create a new one.

My thoughts:
I started reading the Traveling Pants books in college and loved them.  I even thought the movies were great.  When I found out another book was coming I was pretty excited to see how Brashares would paint the girls as grown ups.  And while I did love reading about where their lives had taken them post college, this book significantly annoyed me from the beginning.

As a reader, you’re kept in the dark a lot, constantly trying to figure out what is really going on.  Naturally things all come together at the end, so as a fan of the series you know this is the last one, but it almost comes together a little too nicely.  Maybe I’m just impossible to please?

Even though parts of the story frustrated me, this book is a quick and entertaining read – thought it might be quick because I read it on a plane.  Not much else to do, you know?  You definitely don’t need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one, Brashares covers the basics on the girls’ pasts so you get all caught up.

PS:  I’m currently reading The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes and loving it.  I can’t remember who posted about it on Book Club Friday a few weeks ago, but if you’re reading this, thank you!

Another book to add to my list… I had no idea that she put out another book about the girls. These damn Game of Thrones books are so long that I can’t get anything else read… plus school seems to think I should read my textbook.
