Road Trip Ridiculousness Day 1

6 Jul

Last Tuesday morning, dressed in matching outfits,  two of my fave ladies and I hit the road in our rented, already dinged (I swear) Toyota Camry and headed west on I-40.  Also known as Route 66.

We were en route to drive through the majestic states of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally Nevada.  We hit up some truly amazing and ridiculous spots along our memorable journey.

Our first stop was the Slug Bug Ranch in Panhandle, TX.  A tribute, if you will, to Cadillac Ranch.

We were a bit unprepared at this stop.  No spray paint in hand just yet.

Next up we cruised by Splash Amarillo and immediately busted a U so we could hit.  that.  up.  May I introduce you to the ride of your life?

That’s The Taco.  Pretty sure it had a real name, but the gift shop was selling shirts that read “I Survived the Taco”.  I didn’t follow instructions (typical) and nearly broke my neck.  Totally worth the cost of admission right there.

After we dried off it was time to hit the real deal  With neon and metallic spray paint in hand, we entered Cadillac Ranch.

I think this girl may appreciate this one.Gotta represent!

Not long after Cadillac Ranch we entered the great state of New Mexico.  Desert.  Mountains.  Green Chiles.  Awesome restaurants from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives in Albuquerque.

Enter the Standard Diner.  Thank you Guy Fieri.  This place was delicious.  It took us almost an hour to decide what we wanted.  I went with one of the night’s specials.  Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Kale.  Loooved it.

Their truffle fries were to die for and they had an apple compote and cinnamon brie that I would sell a toe for.

With (very) full bellies we hit the road for a couple more hours, stopping for the night at the Sands Motel in Grants.  It was quaint, almost as if it had not been touched since the 1960s.  The room had 2 sinks, which I always think is a bonus when you have more than one girl in  a room.

We called it a night.  We had to get plenty of beauty sleep for Day 2.  Dinosaurs, Petrified Woods and giant arrows!

Enticing right?

So fun! I hope you got to “Stand on the corner of Winslow, Arizona”… I think that’s on the way to/from Vegas!

That Cadillac Ranch looks awesome! Do they provide spray paint of do you have to get that yourself? Cuz that’s a lot of spray paint you got there. 🙂

We bought our own (yay for WalMart of Amarillo!), but totally could have shown up empty handed. There were half empty cans of spray paint all over.
